Journal of the Moscow Patriarchate – the official publication of the Russian Orthodox Church. . The main target audience is the Orthodox clergy and active laity.
Story
It began to be published in 1931, thirteen years after the closure in 1918 of „Church Gazette”, the official organ of the Holy Synod. The very name of the magazine said that it „is the spokesman for the true church identity” (ZhMP. 1931. No. 1. P. 1). The magazine was billed as monthly, but only 6 issues were published in the first year of publication; further (1932-1935) the magazine was published even less frequently (once every 4 months) and had a continuous numbering (8 issues were doubled). The magazine did not have a cover, its was 3,000 copies, and its volume was from 8 to 14 pages, together with calendar information for the next few months in advance (it was not possible to publish the church calendar in a separate edition at that time). After the renovation magazines were closed, it remained the only church publication in the USSR. There were 24 issues, then the release in 1935 was banned by the authorities.

After a break, it was resumed in 1943: No. 1 is dated September 12, the day of the enthronement of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Sergius. A circulation of 3,000 copies was printed at one of the best printing enterprises in Moscow – at printing house No. 18 of the Polygraphkniga trust of OGIZ. From the second issue in 1943, the circulation of the ZhMP was increased to 5,000 copies, and starting from No. 9 in 1944, it was 6,000 copies.

The magazine was designed for the clergy, its function was to convey information: coverage of events in church life ( in dioceses and abroad), publication of resolutions of the Holy Synod, decrees and messages of the Patriarch, etc. Also, sermons, studies on theological and church-historical topics, etc. were published on the pages of the WMP.

As the editor-in-chief of the Moscow Patriarchate publishing house, Archbishop Bronnitsky Tikhon (Yemelyanov), noted in 2000: “Despite the well-known limitations of the era of totalitarianism, the magazine still played a very important role in the life of the Church. Of course, in terms of its level, it was incomparable with pre-revolutionary editions – not in terms of volume (it is enough to recall that in the 30s it had 8-10 pages, in the 40s – 40-60 and only since 1954 – the current 80 ), neither in terms of circulation (it was almost impossible for an ordinary believer to get it), nor in terms of content. And yet it was that small flame that the hostile winds of the era could not extinguish. People were drawn to him, all the few theological and literary church forces at that time gathered around him. At different times they worked in the Journal; prominent Russian theologians, liturgists, church historians, and Slavic scholars collaborated with it. This tradition continues today. “

The circulation of the issue was 25 thousand copies, in 1984 it was increased to 30 thousand copies.

In 1971-1994, the edition was also published in English – The Journal of the Moscow Patriarchate.

In connection with the reorganization of the Publishing Department of the Moscow Patriarchate at the Bishops’ Council of the Russian Orthodox Church in 1994 and the removal of Metropolitan Pitirim (Nechaev) from its leadership, the production of ZhMP was temporarily suspended – for the first time since 1943. In the first 9 months of 1995, only 2 issues were published: No. 5 (for Easter) and a special issue. Through the efforts of the new editor-in-chief, Bishop Tikhon (Emelyanov), in a few months the missing issues were prepared and the debt to the WMP subscribers was liquidated. The design of the magazine has changed significantly: illustrations have become colored, their number has increased significantly.

During its existence, the design and format have changed more than once. At the beginning of the 2000s, the format was 70×100 1/16, 80 pages.

In the spring of 2009, Patriarch Kirill raised the issue of bringing the content and appearance of the magazine in line with the tasks facing the Russian Orthodox Church. In April 2009, Sergei Chapnin was appointed executive editor of the magazine, who reorganized the publication. Since January 2010 the magazine has been published in a new format on 96 pages. As Sergei Chapnin noted: “I confess that what I did with The Journal of the Moscow Patriarchate in 2009, there was nothing new. I just returned to the forgotten traditions of Russian church journalism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Namely, he revived the unofficial part in the official publications. This is the only way to show what real life was, is and will be behind the austere church façade. “

In 2012—2014. a specialized supplement to the ZhMP „Temple Maker” was published.

In 2013-2015. the iPad version of the magazine was published.
Editorial Council
In September 2011, with the blessing of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, the editorial board of the Journal of the Moscow Patriarchate was created:
Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk (chairman),Chairman of the Synodal Department of Religious Education and Catechesis, Metropolitan of Rostov and Novocherkassk Mercury (Ivanov),Chairman of the Synodal Department for Charity and Social Service, Bishop of Smolensk and Vyazemsk Panteleimon (Shatov),Executive Secretary of the Patriarchal Council for Culture, Metropolitan of Pskov and Porkhov Tikhon (Shevkunov),Dimitri Smirnov, Chairman of the Patriarchal Commission on Family Issues, Protection of Motherhood and Childhood,Chairman of the Synodal Information Department Vladimir LegoydaExecutive Editor of the Journal of the Moscow Patriarchy Evgeny Strelchik (in 2016 he replaced Sergei Chapnin in this position).Chief editorsMetropolitan Sergius (Stragorodsky) (1931-1935)Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Sergius (1943-1944)Metropolitan of Leningrad (since 1945 – Patriarch) Alexy (Simansky) (1944-1946)Metropolitan Nikolay (Yarushevich) (1946-1960)bishop, archbishop Nikodim (Rotov) (1960-1961)archimandrite, bishop, archbishop, metropolitan Pitirim (Nechaev) (1962-1994)bishop, archbishop Tikhon (Emelyanov) (1995-2000)Archpriest Vladimir Siloviev (2000-2017)Bishop Nikolay (Pogrebnyak) (since 2017)
