Check Out “Comic Fiesta 2017”, Largest Otaku Event in Malaysia – “FGO” Popular Among Cosplayers

“Comic Fiesta 2017” took place in Malaysia on December 16 and 17. We provide you a photo report from Malaysia’s biggest Otaku event.

Biggest Ever! Otaku Fever No Different from Japan

“Comic Fiesta” is hosted in December every year. In Southeast Asia, it is the last big event of the year. Its scale matches those of Thai, Singapore, and even Japan.

There are many Corporate Booths, but there are even more eyeballs on the Doujin Area. The art booths were furnished with walls, as well as the plain table setups just like the Comiket in Tokyo. Not sure about the exact numbers, but there are approximately more than 300 circles participating.

Popular titles include “Love Live! and “Fate/stay night” for men, “My Hero Academia” “Touken Ranbu” for women. However at non-Japanese conventions, circles tend to produce various goods (like postcards and posters) from a compilation of many works, so it’s hard to say what genre is especially popular. That means you get to see many works displayed. But the popular genres were almost no different to those in Japan.

There are weird trinkets too. I’ve checked out the moss circles, but they’ve seemed to have powered up this year.

Next up is Malaysia’s cosplay. Malaysia’s cosplay culture is very heated. Even among Southeast Asian countries where cosplay is popular, Malaysia probably has the most participants.

“Comic Fiesta” was held outside nearby Malaysia’s iconic Petronas Twin Towers, making the location setup unique to Malaysia.

Surprisingly, there were many participants from Taiwan, as well as Japanese cosplayers.

When it comes to Malaysia’s popular cosplay work, it’s the same as in most other countries around the world in 2017. This time it was “Fate/Grand Order.” Wow. So. Popular.

Otherwise, we’ve also spotted “Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World”, “Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid”, “Kamen Rider” series, “Super Sentai” series, and such. Here are some shots taken that day:
