In a surprising move announced during this year’s Jump Festa event in Japan, the immensely popular anime series “One Piece” is set to receive a remake titled “The One Piece.” The remake will revisit the anime’s origins, starting from Chapter 1 of the manga, specifically the series’ “East Blue” arc.

Interestingly, the original “One Piece” anime, which premiered in 1999, is still ongoing, with Episode 1,088 airing recently. The decision to remake a series that’s actively producing new episodes is unconventional, and the details regarding how much of the story will be re-adapted remain unclear. The teaser video, posted on the official One Piece YouTube channel, leaves many questions unanswered as well.

The trailer also implies a release in 2024, marking the 25th anniversary of the current One Piece anime. This new adaptation will also not be produced by Toei Animation, the studio behind the original. Instead, animation duties will be handled by Wit Studio, recognized for their work on the early seasons of “Attack on Titan” and the ongoing “Spy x Family.”

Given the extensive length of the original anime, “The One Piece” is unlikely to be a comprehensive remake of every story beat, and is instead positioned to offer existing fans a chance to revisit cherished moments from the Straw Hat Pirates’ adventures. Simultaneously, it serves as an entry point for newcomers curious about the series without committing to the extensive episode count, especially considering the more modest production budgets predating “One Piece’s” meteoric rise to its current iconic status. Fans can keep their eyes out for more news on this exciting anime reveal!
