Skeleton Armor?! Japanese Costume Maker Shige INTERVIEW

What do you get when you mix skeletons, armor, and fetish gear? You get the work of Shige-san, a master in the craft of bone-and-machine like armor! We had the rare opportunity to speak with him about his specific, yet incredible, craftsmanship:

From masks to armor and everything in between, you can be sure that Shige-san will create the perfect piece for any occasion — one unlike any you may have seen before.

“I only started making these skeleton-style costumes last year,” Shige tells us, “but I’ve been making costumes in general for about 40 years now.”

With the perfect combination of cool and sexy, it’s easy to see why so many fetish cosplayers choose to clad themselves in Shige’s work. But as it turns out, his talent in costume making has worked in his favor, too.

“I took part in the Kamen Rider Grand Prix,” Shige continues, “Where you can write a script, or film a movie, or do a performance, and the grand prize was a laser disc not available anywhere else. I really wanted that laser disc, so I applied.”

And with the help of his costume-making experience, Shige was able to win — but not the prize he expected.

“I had won first place in not just one, but all five competitions taking place in the Grand Prix. And the grand prize wasn’t just a laser disc — it was a car!

Though leather isn’t the only material Shige-san uses to create the perfect outfit. Plastic, foam, and even metal are all used to capture that perfect sci-fi look.

And it’s not just outfits, either; Shige started out making masks, and we were given the opportunity to try out the many he has stored in his workshop.
