Niigata Prefecture Gets Gundam-Themed Manhole Covers!

Anime fans can soon add the city of Minamiuonuma in Niigata prefecture to their travel list, as it welcomes visitors with the newest addition to its landscape: Gundam-inspired manhole covers! The two designs being unveiled feature the RX-78-2 Gundam and YMS-15 Gyan Gundam while also incorporating aspects of life in Niigata prefecture.

On the first manhole cover, the RX-78-2 Gundam stands proudly amidst the picturesque Koshihikari rice fields of Minamiuonuma. Blending the series’ futuristic tech with the city’s historic, traditional background symbolizes the harmony between tradition and innovation, while also featuring bright imagery and colors that immediately catch anyone’s attention.

With the YMS-15 Gyan Gundam design manhole, the Gundam is set against the majestic backdrop of Mt. Hakkai, another staple landmark of Niigata prefecture. The cool blue colors highlight the snowy and wintery nature of the setting, with rich symbolism of alpine beauty and natural abundance.

Those visiting the region can catch a glimpse of these brilliantly artful manhole covers at the visitor information center near the East Exit of Muikamachi Station in Minamiuonuma until May 31st, 2024. Afterward, the manhole covers will find their permanent home on the street of Minamiuonuma, inviting travelers to embark on an unforgettable journey through the heart of Gundam-inspired beauty.
